about

Tarnation’s debut release, The Prayer Furnace, stands as a culmination of the band’s first round of songwriting. The album picks up pieces from the score for Jason Ogawa's film "The Funny Things You Do". Gritty, country-tinged soundtrack, and thrusts in ambient soundscapes, gypsy rhythms, dastard guitar riffs, and harmonic(a) dissonance(s) in a stream of conscious-esque form. The tracks span from dopers found meandering abandoned beaches, to the religious experience and the casualty of the LSD downward spiral. Hope-waves come crashing on to the sandbank of the vacant-and-abandoned sands, sending adrift the form of what-once-was-a-man now-is-a-sha-man to reexamine life and all it’s what-have-yous.

"A nice bit of psych-ambience that loosely lingers with the listener as a good film does... This is the cassette debut from Chicago's Tarnation collective. Out on Teen River, known for past releases from Julie Byrne and label co-head Katrina Stoneheart. The atmosphere here is one of a panic and horror filled jungle; a firefight, bloodshed, not far off. Everything is drained and your left with nothing, staggering - the mood here is excellent. Edition of 100, download included. Recommended."

about

Tarnation Chicago, Illinois

Tarnation is an experimental quintet of multi-instrumentalists. Originally formed to create a film score, the collective continues to take a cinematic approach to music. Ambient soundscapes are punctuated by sound effects and sampled voices. Cultural references and suggested narrative emerge and dissolve in the ethereal sound. The familiar gives way to the uncanny. ... more
